Tom Hill-Jack Rafferty: Positive covid test calls off fight, but hopefully it will go ahead at later date

Tom Hill’s big fight with undefeated MTK prospect is off after Tom and coach, Dave Binns, both had positive results to their COVID tests.

It is devastating news for Team Hill, who were relishing the challenge of taking on the ‘Demolition Man’ in Pontefract on Sunday night.

Hill and Binns arrived in the fight Bubble on Friday and took their tests ahead of a night in isolation.

“Me and my coach both tested positive for COVID with no symptoms,” the Redcar boxer told his friends and fans on Facebook.

“I want to thank MTK Global for the opportunity and also apologies to Jack Rafferty and team.

“Sick as they come. Hopefully we can get the fight rescheduled.”

It promised to be some fight too – an unbeaten Rafferty, who has seven stoppages in his 12-fight winning streak, against the gifted Hill, on his way back up after his Northern Area title defeat to Ellis Corrie last December.

Hopefully it is a match which can happen and relatively soon.

James Dickens tested positive ahead of his Golden Contract final at the end of September and MTK have since rescheduled the fight with Ryan Walsh on Wednesday, December 2.

Hill’s manager, Phil Jeffries, told punch-lines: “I’m absolutely gutted for Tom and Dave.

“This was a big fight and Tom was in great nick, physically and mentally. He was really up for it.

“Hopefully it’s a fight MTK can re-schedule.”
