Ellis Corrie-Chad Ellis: Northern Area champion gives his reaction to Tom Hill’s calls for a re-match

Ellis Corrie has given short shrift to Tom Hill’s demands of a Northern Area re-match.

Corrie makes the maiden defence of his belt on Saturday night when he faces unbeaten Spennymoor welterweight, Chad Ellis, at the Newcastle Eagles Community Arena.

The 22-year-old won the title in style with a fourth-round stoppage of Hill in Houghton in December.

Speaking in an interview with British Boxing Blog, Hill described the champion as “really not at my level”.

The popular Redcar boxer said:  “No one expected him to win that night, not even him. Hopefully he comes through this one because I want him after that.”

Corrie though told punch-lines there was no Wilder-Fury return clause in this deal and there will be no second meeting. The Darlington star insists his eyes are on bigger titles, should he make a successful defence against his challenger in the top of the bill affair at the MTK show.

“I think Tom was looking for a reaction in that interview,” he said. “He’s not going to get one.

“He’s clutching at straws, he’s a sore loser – he got beaten up then KO’d.

“I’m not looking for a re-match with him. If it had been close or a draw it might have been a fair shout, but it wasn’t.

“I want different titles if I get the win against Chad.

“It’s great to have won the Northern Area, but I want to push above that, fight for the English or for one of the world bodies belts.

“If I get the win here I’ve got a fight on the Lewis Ritson undercard on April 4 and that’s going to be a time for me to show what I can do.

“I’m looking towards big fights and pushing up the rankings – I’ll fight any welterweight.”

Despite such ambition, Corrie explains it does not mean he is taking his eye off the ball at the Scotswood Road venue.

“Ellis has come on a lot,” said the Steve Wraith and Pete Shepperson boxer. “He’s a good fighter.”

The Ellis derby tops a 14-contest card, which includes Hill’s match with former Olympian, Serge Ambomo, who boxes out of Sheffield.

There have been two alterations to the card with Alex Farrell and debutant Matt Stark McCallum handed new opposition.

Peterlee-trained Greek-Geordie Farrell has a test against the Manchester-based  Czech-born southpaw, Jan Ardon, who is also having his fourth bout.

Former unlicenced boxer McCallum, part of the MTK stable in Gateshead, is now matched with Vaidas Balciauskas.
