Joe Laws: Fans will see a new me at the MTK show in Newcastle but please don’t say I can’t box

His ring entrances can go off the scale and his social media posts can be hilarious.

But the ‘Benwell Bomber’ is promising fans will see a more mature Joe Laws when he takes to the ring in a Newcastle double-header.

The 25-year-old was on the top table at the Matchroom media conference on Wednesday, when he indulged in a bit of banter with promoter Eddie Hearn ahead of his appearance on the April 4 show at the Utilita Arena, starring Lewis Ritson, Tommy Ward and Savannah Marshall.

Before then, the ‘Bomb Squad’ will be out in force at the Newcastle Eagles Community Arena on Saturday, February 29, when Laws will have a six-rounder against an opponent yet to be named.

While excited to be on the Sky Sports show, he says all his energy is on the MTK event where he intends to show just what he is capable of.

“I can’t count my chickens [about the Utilita Arena fight], I need to get the job done on the MTK show first,” the Nik Gittus-trained boxer old punch-lines.

“I’m going to show my maturity there, not go in like a windmill. I am going to show my boxing.

“I hear people say ‘Joe Laws can’t box’ and I sit back laughing my bollocks off thinking ‘yeah, yeah’.

“To say I can’t box is crazy. I’ve come from a very good gym at Birtley, I’ve done hundreds of rounds with Pat and Luke McCormack, Callum French, Thomas Hodgson, Cyrus Pattison and more.

“Sparring with them has made me a teak-tough kid, but could I do that if I couldn’t box?”

The Phil Jeffries-managed star, with eight wins from eight, will still be a happy-go-lucky character but insists there is a serious boxer inside him, who is focused on slimming down to lightweight over the next 12 months.

“I suppose I’m a bit of a Jack the lad, who’ll say it as it is,” he explained. “But I do believe I’ve matured over recent months, with my boxing, my training and how I handle myself.

“I want to make a real statement this year.

“I see this as the way forward. I’ll do the next fight at 142 pounds and my aim is to get down to 135 pounds where I believe I’ll be a handful.

“I’ve never ever dieted in my life but I think this idea will pay off.”

The 15-bout MTK promotion is headlined by the Northern Area championship clash between Ellis Corrie and challenger, Chad Ellis.
