Tommy Ward-Martin Casillas: WBO no 4 expects Mexican tough cookie to ‘give it a go’

Watching Tommy Ward box is like watching an artist at work.

More and more people have had the opportunity to see him perform on the canvas in 2019 after his move under the MTK banner and another chance arrives on Friday.

Ward is in action over eight rounds against Mexico’s Martin Casillas at Caeser’s Palace – the Dubai variety not Las Vegas.

This international super-bantamweight contest is being shown live on IFLTV in the UK and beyond and on ESPN in North America.

Ward shone last time out on the same broadcast platforms and he’ll be looking to do the same again in the United Arab Emirates.

Casillas looks a very tidy foe and tough. The 31-year-old has won 20 times, drawn one and lost 10, three of the 10 coming in challenges for regional belts in the WBC and WBO arenas.

“I know he’s going to come and give it a go,” the NE Security-sponsored star told punch-lines.

“He’s a tough cookie, a come-forward fighter who lets his shots go.

“No doubt he’ll be there for the full eight rounds, he’s never been stopped and he’s got a good record.

“But his style will hopefully mean the opportunities will be there for me to put my stuff together.

“Training has gone well, I’ve had some good sparring and I’m just looking to get in there.”

WBO fourth-rated Ward and Casillas met at Thursday’s weigh-in where Tommy tipped the scales at 129lbs, two pounds heavier than his opponent.

The Dave Garside and Neil Fannan boxer, pictured with his trainer and stablemate Lewis Ritson in Dubai, is chasing the 29th win of his career.

You can catch the action on IFLTV around 3.45pm, with the You Tube channel’s coverage starting at 1.10pm.

The main event sees the unbeaten Jack Catterall tackle Germany’s Timo Schwarzkopf.
