Lawrence Osueke-Dan Azeez: Geordie over the moon to fight for English title in Brentwood

What a fight to come back to.

Lawrence Osueke plans to put the disappointment of a stinker of a British light-heavyweight title eliminator “to bed” by becoming English champion on Saturday, December 14.

Osueke has been matched with fellow unbeaten boxer Dan Azeez in Brentwood on MTK’s Golden Contract show in Brentwood.

It is not part of the tournament but that won’t bother either the Geordie or the South Londoner one jot, given there is a belt to fight for.

Azeez had been due to meet Dec Spellman for the vacant crown, but MTK have announced the North Shields star will instead meet the Lewisham man, who has won all 10 of his professional appearances.

“I’m so happy,” Osueke told punch-lines. “That last fight was terrible, I didn’t perform anywhere near as know I can.

“I’m so pleased to get this opportunity and I plan to take it with both hands.

“I’m looking forward to putting that last fight to bed. I’ve got the motivation and I’m over the moon to have this chance.”

The least said about his last outing the better – his Newcastle date with Ricky Summers turned into a bore draw.

Osueke is a class act but the bout which promised so much just didn’t ‘go for him’ against an awkward opponent.

It was a scrappy spectacle after which the three judges all went in vastly different directions. Marcus McDonnell went 100-92 to Osueke, Michael Alexander scored it 96-95 to Summers while Howard Foster had it 95-95.

Your punch-lines observer scored it 98-94 to the Steve Wraith/ Nik Gittus boxer, who was the better boxer as the fight progressed.

“I thought I won it and having watched it back I believe it was more one-sided than it maybe first looked,” said the 31-year-old Wallsend Boxing Academy star, whose record stands at nine victories and that draw.

“I took a lot of experience from it and I’ll come back better.

“I’m fit, I don’t do camps, I’m never out the gym and I’m looking forward to fighting Dan.

“I don’t know a great deal about him. I know of him, he’s at a similar stage of his career with a similar record as me.”
