Ellis Corrie-Tom Hill: Great Northern Area title derby in prospect at Summer Rumble

Darlington is a no-go this Saturday which means it’s full-speed-ahead for Ellis Corrie at the Stadium of Light in July.

The exciting welterweight had been scheduled to box at the Dolphin Centre before tackling Tom Hill for the Northern Area title.

However, his manager and promoter, Steve Wraith, has been forced to pull this weekend’s event at one of his favourite venues after a couple of bouts fell through.

But it will merely enhance the expectation of the A66 confrontation at the Summer Rumble on Sunday, July 14 between Corrie and Hill who, of course, is managed by Wraith’s promoting partner, Phil Jeffries.

It’s a belter of a match as Redcar’s Dave Binns-trained ‘One Bomb’ puts his 100 per cent six-fight sequence on the line against ‘2 Cool’ from Pete Shepperson’s Darlington stable, whose record of 3-1-1 does him no justice.

Wraith told punch-lines: “It’s a great top of the bill fight.

“Tom has done well so far, he sells a lot of tickets, and Ellis is a very good fighter who has shown he’s not afraid of travelling.

“This has the makings of a fantastic event.”

Corrie has made a seamless transition from the martial arts scene to the square ring, having been an accomplished Muay Thai fighter.

His success in that discipline has probably been a factor in him going away to take on home-town favourites.

He was unlucky to concede a close defeat to undefeated Welsh prospect, Maredudd Thomas, in Ebbw Vale in his seconds paid appearance and last time out to say he was unfortunate to only be awarded a draw in Bracknell against another unbeaten new-kid-on-the-block, George Lamport.

“Anyone who has watched Ellis will know he’s a very capable fighter, who has proved himself on the road,” added Wraith.

“Those couple of results might not have gone for him, but this is on neutral ground at the Stadium of Light.”

There are plenty of other North-East stars on show, including unbeaten Newcastle prospects Joe Laws, Lawrence Osueke and Terence Wilkinson.

Unbeaten Darren Surtees , back-to-form Simon Vallily and Darlington light-heavy Steve Cooper are also in action, as are new pros, Adam Gair, Anth Ornsby and Michael Webster who have had one contest each.
