National Amateur Championships: Magnificent seven TTW boxers lead North-East fight

A magnificent seven Tyne, Tees & Wear boxers are in Nottingham this weekend for the female section of England’s National Amateur Championship.

Jade Pearce, Hannah Robinson, Simone Thompson, Sadie Thomas, Hannah Shield, April Hunter and Georgia O’Connor will be in action at the Harvey Hadden Sport Complex.

Three of the seven are positioned in the same division where there could be an all-Tyne, Tees & Wear at lightweight.

Birtley’s Hannah Robinson begins the defence of her U60 kilo against Frankie Gavin’s ABC boxer, Sian O’Toole, on Saturday.

The number one seed, part of the GB squad, won the 2018 title in London with a thrilling display against Shanice James.

On the other side of the draw is number two seed Sadie Thomas, from Headland ABC, the Hartlepool club of former world champion, Savannah Marshall.

Thomas (pictured), beaten by Robinson in last year’s competition, starts her campaign with a quarter-final against Ellis Hopkins (City of Leicester) on Saturday.

If successful, the 20-year-old could well face a North-East neighbour in the semi-final.

Lambton Street’s Simone Thompson is up against Louise Orton (St Mary’s) in her last-eight bout on Saturday. It should be some competition at lightweight.

Teesside Jade Pearce carries the TTW flag at U57 Kilos.

The daughter of former ABA champion John Pearce, the Wellington ABC boxer meets Boston Town’s Angela Finch.

If she comes through that contest, she will meet the winner of Calli Bushell (Jersey) v Amy Andrew (Haringey).

Birtley’s Hannah Shield is up against Adrienne Phebey (Eastbourne) at U64 kilos.

If successful on Saturday, she would meet the winner of Sophie Colbourn (Royal Navy) v Harli Whitwell (St Ives) in Sunday’s semi.

April Hunter, from Howdon, faces Paige Goodyear (Brooklands) in the U69 kilos section, where she will hope to meet the winner of

Laura Stevens (Far Cotton) v Lucy Kisielewska (Eastbourne) in the semis.

Georgia O’Connor, another of the Birtley contingent, does not have to break into a sweat to reach final in the middleweight division.

O’Connor has a straight final at U75kilos with Jodie Wilkinson on Sunday.
