Gifted Geordie Lawrence Osueke faces his biggest night yet at Metro Radio Arena

As you would expect, the big stars will come out well after dark in Newcastle on Saturday night.

The main attractions, Joshua Buatsi, Glenn Foot, Robbie Davies, Francesco Patera and Lewis Ritson will all climax the show at the Metro Radio Arena from eight until late.

But, if you’ve spent your hard-earned cash, this reporter recommends you don’t miss a minute. Certainly take a look at a Geordie who has star quality written all over him – Lawrence Osueke.

The 30-year-old has strolled through five professional appearances in some style, all wins with one inside the distance.

Managed by Steve Wraith and trained by Niki Gittus, this light-heavyweight prospect will now face his hardest fight to date, six rounds with Charles Adamu at the Metro Radio Arena.

If the name sounds familiar, it should. The Ghana legend had Commonwealth title duels with Carl Froch, George Groves and Rocky Fielding and is a former champ at that level.

While he’s a year past the big 4-0, he’s still fighting, still winning and still applying a KO or two.

“He’s been around the block and had a lot of big contests so this will definitely be a learning fight,” Osueke told punch-lines. “Every flight is towards your education because it’s a tough game and I’m just at the beginning.

“This is the sort of fight I need to get me ready to be boxing for titles.

“The last fight was due to be six rounds and it’s great to be doing six here, against an experienced opponent.

“It is a great opportunity to be fighting a man like this, all the years of experience and big fights he’s had I can only learn from it.”

Osueke, who cut his teeth at Rye Hill ABC and won an ABA title, has boxing in his blood, his uncle, Manny Burgo, is a former British top 10 heavyweight.

Thirty years after Manny was inside the square ring, his nephew is making good strides, with this his second big arena show, having boxed at the same venue in June when Josh Kelly and Lewis Ritson were the headline acts.

“Boxing is booming in Newcastle so to get the opportunity to fight on the Metro Radio Arena is great,” added Lawrence, pictured above at the Metro Centre in mid-week.
