Glenn Foot: A machete couldn’t put me down so Robbie Davies Jnr won’t

A machete didn’t put me down, so Robbie Davies won’t.

That is the no-nonsense prediction from Glenn Foot ahead of his British and Commonwealth championship scrap with Robbie Davies Jnr in Newcastle.

Saturday’s Sunderland v Liverpool light-welterweight collision has the makings of the fight of the night on the Lewis Ritson-Francesco Patera European title confrontation.

Fighting comes natural to Foot, whose trademark all-out aggression approach will be evident at the Metro Radio Arena.

But for the skill of a surgeon back in 2011 and Foot’s powers of determination, this double championship match might never have happened.

The Marley Pots favourite was the victim of a machete attack on a Sunderland street in 2011, when he almost lost his arm.

Foot says he was amused by a Twitter poll this which suggested that fight fans expect Davies to make the Commonwealth champ his 13th career stoppage.

“I’ve never been stopped in my life, a machete couldn’t stop me, so I don’t think Davies can,” said the 30-year-old.

“His record might look good, but he’s been boxing bums and don’t forget he’s been on the canvas himself.

“I’ll be putting him on his back on Saturday.”

Foot and Davies exchanged pleasant greetings at the Metro Centre last night, when the principal stars of the Matchroom show went through their paces at a public work-out.

Glenn has been known to get in the face of his opponent, literally at press conferences and weigh-ins, so is this a new ‘Hammer’?

“No,” he smiled. “I don’t believe in all that [being nice] stuff before a bout.

“Once you start getting all matey then you’ve lost. You are there to fight him and beat him.”

Foot has put in the hard yards in camp and has done plenty of sparring, including countless rounds with his comrade at East Durham College, Darren Surtees, who is fresh from a KO win in Jeddah on the World Boxing Super Series event.

“Sparring has gone brilliant,” said Foot. “I’ve done a lot with Darren, who’s just had that great win in Saudi Arabia at the Super Series final.

“We knocked lumps out of each other!

“I feel brilliant, everything has gone perfectly in the build-up.”
