Glenn Foot-Robbie Davies Jnr: Power is in my fists says challenger

Robbie Davies insists he carries all the power for the mouthwatering British and Commonwealth light-welterweight title confrontation with Glenn Foot.

Two of the UK’s great fighters at 140lbs collide in Newcastle on Saturday, October 13 and it looks like being a classic.

Foot defends his Commonwealth belt for the first time since he stopped Jason Easton in Glasgow back in February, while the vacant Lonsdale Belt is also up for grabs.

Davies too comes into this Metro Radio Arena clash off the back of a cracking title success when he avenged his only career defeat by halting Michal Syrowatka in the final round to regain the WBA Continental crown he had lost to the Pole in his previous bout.

Both fighters boast impressive records, Foot having lost only three times in 26 appearances with Davies winning 15 out of 16 contests, 12 coming via stoppage.

The Liverpool favourite refutes suggestions he will have to be cute to stay out of the way of the Sunderland fighter’s all-out attack tactics, insists that it’s Foot who should worry about his fists.

“Not so much cute,” Davies told punch-lines. “Since I turned professional, Glenn has only stopped one boxer and that was Jason Easton, I think I’ve only had one person that hasn’t been stopped!

“Every single opponent I’ve faced, has touched the canvas, all of them.

“Even the lad I lost to was down.

“I know the power lies with me but obviously it’s not always easy getting your shots off when someone is in your face like that.”

Davies smiled as he delivered that last line, as the 29-year-old knows all too well how Foot will approach the contest – with aggression.

The Scouser said he was impressed with the display of the Marley Pots hard case as he inflicted a first career defeat on Easton.

But he believes the Scot was picked off too readily and he won’t be so easy for ‘The Hammer’ to connect with.

“I don’t think Jason had the experience, he was in with someone who knew how to do the rounds,” said Davies. “I think Easton was tiring quickly and Glenn was bringing big shots over the top and landing them easily.

“That was a great performance from Glenn.”

Matchroom stage a packed bill which is headed by Lewis Ritson’s bid to win the vacant European lightweight title against Belgium’s Francesco Patera.

Olympian Joshua Buatsi is also in action along with a wealth of North-East talent, Joe Laws, Lawrence Osueke, Simon Vallily and Tommy Ward.
