Joe Laws inspired by Lewis Ritson as he prepares for Houghton fight

Be prepared for the deployment of the ‘Bomb Squad’ again.

The fans of Joe Laws are set to raise the roof at the Rainton Meadows Arena next Friday when the ‘Benwell Bomber’ takes to the ring for the second time as a professional.

Laws will box a four rounder, against a as-yet un-named opponent, on the undercard of Tommy Ward’s challenge for the IBF European super-bantamweight title against Alvaro Rodriguez.

The 23-year-old Geordie made a spectacular debut earlier this month at the Summer Rumble.

Laws piled into Sylwester Walczak from the very first ring of James Holborn’s bell, with body-breaking hooks and bombs to the head of the Pole.

To the credit of the visitor, he was brave and resilient, and thankful some of the head shots missed.

However, it was inevitable the Phil Jeffries-managed fighter would find the target and that’s how it transpired in the final round.

A left hook and then a right stunned Walczak who went down after two further right hooks to his head.

While he beat the count, just, referee Ron Kearney rescued him at two minutes, 16 seconds.

Laws told punch-lines that he is trying to box more but that his fighting instinct kicks in.

“My main objective, always, is to win,” said the former Birtley ABC crowd favourite. “I train to do the rounds.

“I did get a fair few stoppages in the amateurs but I just go there to do my thing and get the win.

“If the stoppage comes then that’s great.”

KOs are never a certainty but one thing is certain is that he is a finisher, just like his stablemate, Lewis Ritson.

The Sandman, who has destroyed everyone in front of him on his way to winning the Lonsdale Belt, is also managed by Jeffries.

And, like Ritson, Laws had no hesitation in making the black and white/ red and white partnership with the Wearside fight figure.

“Look at what Lewis Ritson has achieved and he started off on a ticket deal,” said the Graeme Rutherford-trained fighter.

“Jaffa does class for his boxers.

“Few managers do it for the love of the sport, but Jaffa does and I was delighted to to go with him.”

Laws is just part of a bumper bill at the Houghton venue.

Dave Allen, Chad Ellis, Jordan Ellison, Anth Hardy, Tom Hill, Kyle Redfearn, Mohammed Waqas, and Terence Wilkinson are also on the show.
