Dazzla is back and it’s official!
Darren Surtees has been given the green light to return to the ring.
The 23-year-old not taped up the gloves since winning the Northern Area light-welterweight title last May when he stopped Ross Jameson in a belter of a derby.
Surtees had been scheduled to contest a six-rounder with rugged Londoner Jordan Grannum at Phil Jeffries’ first show of 2018 on Saturday, March 10 in Houghton.
That was until the British Boxing Board of Control deemed otherwise, blocking the bout following a medical for the unbeaten Thornley boxer.
But the wait is over, with the BBBC giving him the all clear.
Surtees has made a perfect start to his professional career, recording seven straight victories with five inside the distance.
Illness and injury then slowed his progress, followed by the BBBC’s block ahead of the Rainton Meadows bill.
Surtees says he wants to be back ASAP and the Summer Rumble on July 1 would look a good bet.
The big-hitting light-welterweight is part of the incredible team in Peterlee under the tutelage of Dave Binns.
Since Surtees last boxed there have been amazing developments in the East Durham College gym.
Glenn Foot has won the Commonwealth light-welterweight title, the Hill brothers, Tom and Joe, have burst on the scene and Chris Grout has made a triumphant debut. Lynden Watt is looking to make his return soon, so Team Binns has never looked better!
Surtees, pictured above right with coach Binns, told punch-lines: “A scar had shown up on my brain scan, that’s why they wouldn’t pass me to box on Jaffa’s show.
“I was always confident, but they wanted a second opinion which has now been done.
“It’s great to be given the go-ahead to box again. I’d like to box at the Stadium of Light but would love to be boxing before then.”
