Luke McCormack reaches last eight at Commonwealth Games after edging rival

Luke McCormack has followed in the ring steps of twin, Pat, by reaching the last eight at the Gold Coast.

The Washington boxer edged Sean McComb on points in a UK derby in the round of 16 at the Commonwealth Games.

Luke had beaten the Belfast light-welterweight in the quarter-finals of the European Championships last year in the Ukraine on a split-decision.

And the 22-year-old repeated the trick in Australia to move to within one victory of winning a medal.

Now though, he must upset the home nation, taking on Aussie Liam Wilson in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.

It was the second victory of the Gams for Luke, who had outpointed Kavuma Ssemujja, from Uganda, in the round of 32.

Brother Pat is also in action on Tuesday at the Oxenford Studios, where he will tackle Musa Bwogi in the quarter-finals.

The Birtley welterweight knocked out Grenada’s Jonathan Francois in the final round of their round of 16 contest on Saturday.

Club-mate, Calum French, enters the fray on Monday when he will box Pakistan’s Ali Ahmad in the round of 16 at lightweight.

French is pictured in the middle of the Birtley band of boxing brothers with Pat on the left and Luke on the right.
