Sunderland’s Josh Kelly to fight for WBA belt on Joshua-Parker bill in Cardiff

Josh Kelly has been given the perfect birthday present a maiden first international title fight in front of over 70,000 fans.

Promoter Eddie Hearn announced the Sunderland boxer, 24 today, will fight on the sold-out Anthony Joshua-Joshua Parker heavyweight blockbuster in Cardiff.

Kelly takes on ex-IBF World champ Carlos Molina for the WBA International welterweight title at the Principality Stadium on Saturday March 31, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

The ultra-gifted boxer, known as ‘Pretty Boy’ has only had FIVE bouts, all wins with four inside the distance.

But coach Adam Booth has described him as the “most talented fighter I’ve ever worked with” and has predicted world glory.

So a confrontation with Molina is no shock.

“Adam said it’s time for me to step up, so let’s go,” said Kelly.

“I feel this is a real test against a proven fighter.

“He’s a former World champion so you can’t deny this is my biggest fight to date.

“I can’t wait to step between those ropes in Cardiff and propel myself into the mix.”

Molina is some opponent, having boxed 38 times, and has had as many title contrasts as Kelly has had bouts in total.

“He’s never been stopped so it says a lot,” said Kelly.

“Just look at the names on his record that he’s been in with, I know how tough he will be.

“The motivation is to win against any fighter is enough for me, I want to perform on the big stage – I’m very excited to say the least.”

Kelly, a footballer in his youth at Hartlepool United and Sunderland, has made boxing his living and what a decision.

He has raced through every opponent put in front of him by the Matchroom supremo.

“I’m ready for this,” said the Rio Olympian.

“I feel physically, mentally and emotionally ready to take this step up and have been for a fight or two.

“I’ve learnt a lot in the fights and in training over the past year and also got to know myself even more.

“The learning process never stops, there are improvements to be made with each fight and every step up starting March 31.”
