Natasha Jonas v Katie Taylor: My career not about a showdown with Irish legend

Katie Taylor v Natasha Jonas. It’s a fight the boxing world would love to see.

But one half of that potential match-up insists that the sporting queen of Ireland does not dominate her thoughts. Far from it, Jonas is plotting her own path with coach Joe Gallagher and promoter Eddie Hearn.

And the next step on that path comes on Sunday in Manchester where Miss GB chases her fifth win as a pro.

Jonas tackles Poland’s experienced campaigner Karina Kopinska on the JD NXTGEN show at the Victoria Warehouse.

“I’ve not based my comeback around Katie Taylor,” said the Liverpool star, who fought out a London 2012 quarter-final epic with Taylor before losing on points.

“We have got a good rivalry and obviously Chantelle [Cameron] is in the mix too.

“But me and Katie are not even the same weight, I’m boxing at super-feather and she’s at lightweight.

“It’s not about me and her, there is a big rivalry and it’s a fight people probably want to see after the Olympics.

“But there are big fights out there and my whole journey is not about Katie Taylor and the same goes for her.”

Jonas is a strong,  determined person, inside and outside the square ring, and the ex-World championship bronze medallist will do it her way and who can blame her.

The former Rotunda ABC southpaw is 33, but is very much a young 33, given the break she had during her retirement when she had daughter, Mele.

“I got into boxing quite late, aged 21,” she told punch-lines. “I stopped after the Commonwealth Games [in 2014] so I’ve only been boxing about 10 years, I think I’ve got the durability and longevity.

“It’s not like I’m one of the lads who’s been boxing since I was 10 or like Amanda [Coulson] who was boxing from her teens and had a long unbroken career.

“I feel I have plenty left in the tank.”

That spells bad news for Kopinska who is the next to stand opposite the southpaw.

The 29-year-old, from Sosnowiec, is no dummy, having fought 36 times as a professional, including a recent challenge for a version of the world featherweight title, losing on points in Germany to Elina Tissen.

But Jonas is on the march to the very top and will take some stopping, meaning it could be a difficult night for Kopinska.
