Tommy Ward is excited at the prospect of boxing on a massive stadium show – should he get the call to defend his British title on the Lee Selby v Josh Warrington blockbuster.
That IBF featherweight title showdown will be staged at Elland Road on Saturday, May 19, when Warrington aims to become Leeds’s first world champ at the home of his beloved Leeds United.
May is the month when Ward is earmarked to defend his British super-bantamweight crown against the man he took it from, James Dickens. The 23-year-old defeated Jazza a short jab down the way from Elland Road, at the First Direct Arena last May.
Ward-Dickens 2 is currently out to purse bids and would be a cracking support contest for what promises to be a spectacular event.
“It’s possibly looking that way but nothing has been announced yet,” said Ward, who is part of Frank Warren’s exciting BT Sport and BoxNation squad .
“My fight with Jazza has to take place by the end of May and the 19th is the date of the Josh Warrington show.
“I won it in Leeds last year and it’s not far for my people to travel. It would be fantastic to box in a big stadium and on a massive show, but we’ll have to wait and see.”
The NES Securities-sponsored ace will be back in action on Saturday, March 10, at Houghton where Phil Jeffries stages his first promotion of 2018.
The Hartlepool-trained Neil Fannan and Dave Garside talent has not fought since a successful first defence of his British strap against Sean Davis in Newcastle last November.
Ward will be joined at Rainton Meadows Arena by a number of unbeaten North-East boxers, such as Darren Surtees and Tom Hill.
