Five wins in South Shields, next stop Darlington for North-East boxing

Next stop the Dolphin Centre.

North-East boxing showed its class on Saturday night ion South Shields, where Anthony Nelson marked his comeback with a win over Simas Volosinas.

There were great victory for other men from the fly categories, Joe Maphosa, Paul Gidney and Sam Menzies, while Lawrence Osueke doubled his pro win tally.

Now, it’s on to Darlington where Steve Wraith promotes what looks a compelling event on Saturday, May 26, labelled ‘For whom the bell tolls’.

A cracking derby tops the bill, with Darlington’s very own Ellis Corrie tackling Basi Razak, from Newcastle over eight rounds for the British Promoters Association Challenge belt.

There is also the comeback of one-time top-line British heavyweight, Chris Burton, with ‘Hightower’ back after a six-year-absence.

The 37-year-old former Prizefighter silver medallist has been training at Pete Shepperson’s flourishing DBMA gym and looks as for as the proverbial fiddle.

While Burton is resuming his career, two talented fellas are just starting out.

Mark Downing, the newest boxing addition to the Shepperson camp, will debut as will Hartlepool mover Luke Cope, who is trained by Imran Naeem in Stockton.

Richard O’Neill, from Jeff Saunders’ Fishburn camp, will also be in action having seen a title derby with Greg O’Neil in February in Dunston fall through.

Sedgefield’s Michael Watson, who made his pro debut last November, when he stopped Bulgaria’s Hristo Yonev, boxes for the second time as a pro in Darlo.

“It’s great to be going back to the Dolphin Centre,” said Wraith. “There is a belting derby at the top of the bill and some great talent on the rest of the bill.”:

Tickets are on sale from any of the fighters and on line from www.newcastlelegends.com.
