Redcar’s thrill-a-minute Hill brothers in action on Houghton show

Teesside’s Twin peaks are ready to rumble.

The Hill brothers, Tom and Joe, will box this Saturday at Houghton-le-Spring, undefeated Tom making his third professional appearance and Joe setting out on his pro journey.

‘One Bomb’ Tom meets Sheffield’s Dan West over four rounds at the Phil Jeffries’ promoted event at the Rainton Meadows Arena, while Joe faces rugged Belfast fighter James Gorman.

The Hills are coached at Peterlee by Dave Binns, who has just celebrated one of his finest professional results after Glenn Foot won the vacant Commonwealth light-welterweight title in Glasgow against Jason Easton.

The trainer, who has guided the careers of unbeaten professionals Darren Surtees and Warren Baister, has been working closely with these young proteges, pictured above, Tom on the right.

Binns is focusing on retaining Tom’s thrilling style while keeping him at distance where he can utilise his long reach.

“Tom has excited people,” explained Binns.

“He’s a tall, rangy lad who likes to scrap at short range! That’s not right.

“Tom’s turning things around and he’s now boxing long, but he can still get involved on the inside.

“He’s a bit like the lad Glenn boxed on Saturday, tall but likes to fight.

“Tom’s best range is long range, he will have to do some inside fighting, but 70 per cent of his work will be at distance.”

Binns added: “Joe’s a bit stockier and he likes to get inside and fight.

“He can sometimes neglect his long-range work, so we’ve been working on that, get his jab going to give him something to work behind.”

Tommy Ward tops the bill against Lesther Cantillano while Thornley’s undefeated Darren Surtees makes a welcome return from injury.

Unbeaten Thornaby flyweight, Joe Maphosa, plus Geordie trio, James Conlon, Kris Pilkington and Mark Taylor complete the eight-bout bill.
