Cameron Vuong-Facundo Arce: Blyth’s ‘The One’ is a ‘whole new fighter’ under coach Ben Davison

For Cameron ‘The One’ Vuong now read Cameron Vuong 2.0.

The unbeaten Blyth boxer has switched coaches despite racking up a perfect 8-0 record and is looking forward to Saturday’s debut bout with en vogue trainer Ben Davison who he says has improved him “in every area”.

Vuong will take on Argentina’s Facundo Arce at Houghton on the undercard of Ben Davison Performance Centre team-mate Pat McCormack’s 10-round international contest with Miguel Parra.

“I can’t wait to show everyone Cameron Vuong 2.0,” said the 23-year-old, who had spent his entire professional career with Jamie Moore at Walkden on the outskirts of Manchester.

“It’s my first fight under Ben Davison and he’s really got me on it.

“I’ve improved in every area. It’s another level down here.

“Every day I come to the gym, I feel like I’m under pressure and it’s made a massive change in me.

“I feel like a whole new fighter.”

Sceptics might suggest Vuong was doing just fine under Moore’s tutelage, especially when you consider how he stopped Jordan Flynn in seven rounds in their grudge fight in March in Altrincham – his fourth success inside the distance.

But ‘The One’ is the man who is doing the fighting – it’s his career and believes Davison, who coaches heavyweight sensation, Moses Itaume, and many more of Britain’s best boxers, is the trainer to take him to the very top.

While gaining the benefit of Davison’s expertise, he says he is inspired by training alongside McCormack.

“I’ve looked up to Pat McCormack ever since we were kids, so it’s great to be on his card,” said Vuong.

“I’m genuinely privileged to train up close with him every day in the gym.

“Pat is a supremely talented fighter and I have no doubt that he will go on and become a World champion.

“And I hope I can match that feat myself one day too. I want to be a complete fighter and I want to get to world level  – I don’t care how long it takes me.”

While McCormack has a very challenging opponent from Mexico, it is a South American foe facing Vuong.

North-East fans might well remember the 29-year-old as the opponent for Tom Welland on the first fight on the live Channel 5 coverage from Newcastle in June. He refused to budge under the Essex fire and then proceeded to chuck a couple of cheap shots AFTER the final bell.

Blyth to Houghton-le-Spring is hardly just around the corner, but Vuong says he is happy to be making only his second appearance on North-Est soil.

“I’m really excited to be fighting so close to home, but not quite home it has to be said, for all my family and friends.

“I’m sure it will be a happy night for both me and Pat.”
