He’s back and not before time.
Ellis Corrie makes his ring return at the Rainton Arena on Friday night when he fights Serge Ambomo on the Jobes Boxing promotion, in association with Phil Jeffries.
It is 26 long months since 2 Cool last taped up his gloves and that only last a few minutes.
But he’s back and a bit like your local boozer when it re-opens he has an ‘under new management’ sign.
Corrie, now coached and managed by Michael Marsden, takes on South Yorkshire-based Cameroon-born Ambomo over six rounds at the Houghton venue.
The Darlington boxer is looking to get back into the title picture after pulling out of his English welterweight championship challenge against Samuel Antwi in Sheffield last September.
It was a huge set-back to Ellis who had established himself as a hot property at 147lbs after two lightning-quick Northern Area title wins, inside four rounds against Tom Hill at the Rainton Arena in December 2019 before taking just a round in his maiden defence with Chad Ellis at the Newcastle Eagles Arena in February 2020.
There are two other six-rounders on Friday night.
It’s Newcastle v Burnley at super-middle where Matt ‘Stark’ McCallum takes on Seamus Devlin, while Jordan Barker Porter has overseas opposition in the shape of Hungary’s Klaudia Vigh.
Nathan Cummiskey, a first-round winner on the last Jobes show at Newcastle City Juniors, also faces a boxer from the old ‘Eastern bloc’ when he meets the Czech Republic’s Jan Prokes.
The Newcastle welterweight will be flying the Jobes flag at the show, though McCallum is managed by Matty.
Jarrow’s Ewan McKenzie chases his fourth straight Rainton Arena win against Nottinghamshire’s Jordan Bradley, while Spennymoor’s Kai Richmond has his second professional bout.
‘The Cobra’ opened his career in style last month in Gateshead, where he outpointed Russia’s Viktor Vezhlivtsev on the Dennis Hobson show.
There will be an eagerly-awaited debut for Bobby Dalton, with the former Redcar ABC star tackling Leicestershire’s George Rogers.
Punch-lines recalls Dalton having a Tyne, Tees & Wear belter with Joe Laws, then of Birtley ABC in the 2018 England Senior Elite Championship, or ABAs if you prefer.
The action is due to start around 7pm at Rainton Arena with tickets available on the door.
