Ellis Corrie’s crack at the English welterweight title is off.
The Darlington boxer has been forced to pull out of his clash Samuel Antwi in Sheffield on Saturday, September 18 after being laid low with a virus.
It is a set-back for the explosive Northern Area champion who had been “flying” in training including a stint in Majorca.
Hopefully, his chance will come again and soon.
Manager Steve Wraith said: “Ellis has been flying in recent weeks and was looking good in sparring but has been hit with a virus which has had him laid low and unable to train.
“To win this fight he needed to be fully fit and this has thrown a spoke in the works.
“I am gutted for the lad but his time will come again.”
In less than 15 minutes inside the ropes, Corrie has proven himself as one of boxing’s up and coming talents.
Firstly, he won the vacant Northern Area belt inside four rounds against unbeaten Redcar talent Tom Hill at the Rainton Meadows Arena in December 2019.
And he was even faster in his maiden defence, stopping another undefeated North-East star, Chad Ellis, inside a round at the Newcastle Eagles Arena in February 2020.
Luck has gone against him since with the Coronavirus pandemic putting paid to a slot on the Lewis Ritson-Miguel Vazquez undercard at the Utility Arena in Newcastle and now illness has robbed him of this shot at Antwi’s English belt.
South Londoner Antwi won the title back in February when he put down Yorkshire’s Darren Tetley twice on the way to a sixth-round stoppage in Bolton.
