2019 may have had more defeats than wins for Liam Conroy but the fighting pride of Cumbria has had some year and has a Golden shot at finishing it in style.
The 25-year-old will be boxing in Essex on Saturday night when MTK stage the third installment of their innovative and exciting series of tournaments.
Conroy boxes in the quarter-finals of the Golden Contract light-heavyweight competition at the Brentwood Centre, live on Sky Sports.
The Barrow star has been drawn to face Andre Sterling in the last eight.
Elsewhere in the division, Tommy Philbin takes on Serge Michel, Steven Ward tackles Ricards Bolotniks and Hosea Burton fighting off Bob Ajisafe.
South Londoner Sterling possesses a good record, winning all but one of his 11 bouts and is a former Southern Area champion.
“I seem to be
the underdog with the bookies, “ said Conroy.
“But I wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I’ve had a look at Sterling and stylistically I think it will gel and make for a good scrap, so I’m looking forward to it.
“I’m thankful to MTK Global for putting me in here and I’m looking forward to showcasing my skills again.”
Conroy has lost both of his championship contests in 2019, but (there is always a but, isn’t there?) he has come out of both with credit.
He gave it a go against Joshua Buatsi in London for the British title in March when he was stopped in the third, while he lost on a technical decision to Steven Ward for the WBO European belt in Belfast, the Irishman winning via points after a bad cut halted the exciting match.
Conroy, therefore, should have no fears going into tonight’s 10-round battle, the sort of task he has become accustomed to in the last couple of years.
Sterling v Controy will be screened around 9pm.
