MTK Newcastle’s boxing boss believes their high-profile show on Tyneside is just the start.
Mac The Knife plan an explosive night of boxing action at the new Newcastle Eagles Arena.
Topping the stacked card on May 3 is unbeaten Irishman, Tyrone McCullagh, who faces Spain’s Alvaro Rodriguez in his maiden defence of his WBO European super-bantamweight title.
MTK have a huge stable of boxers – a figure which continues to grow at pace – and McCullagh is part of their Irish contingent.
Known as ‘White Chocolate’, the 28-year-old, from Derry, has won all 12 of his contests.
If his opponent’s name is familiar, it should be – he was handed a boxing lesson by Tommy Ward last July for the IBF version of the European belt.
The reigning Spanish title holder did go the distance though so it will be interesting to see how how tackles this challenge.
Elsewhere on the jam-packed bill, which will be aired on iFL TV on YouTube, popular North East fighters, including Joe ‘The Benwell Bomber’ Laws and Troy ‘Trojan’ Williamson will hope to put on eye-catching performances, while there is a Tyne-Tees derby between Jone Volau and Simon Vallily.
MTK Newcastle send out a full troop, with new pros, Gary Dodds and Adam Gair, making their debuts alongside unbeaten team-mates, Chad Ellis, Jay Hughes and Darren Reay.
The event is MTK Newcastle’s first major ‘public’ boxing event.
They are looking to carry over the success of their dinner show in December and know that events like this, which will draw in over 2,000 fans, will help them in their aim of changing the face of North East boxing.
Owner of MTK Newcastle, Gary Forrest, believes that this show offers a thrilling fight card of great magnitude for the region.
“We want to deliver high-production boxing shows to the region that will enable local boxers to showcase their talent,” he said.
“This is a great show and will provide entertaining action from the first bell to the last.”
MTK’s global reputation is set to play a massive part in bringing a regular stream of fantastic fight nights to the region, both in boxing and MMA.
Forrest added: “This is only the beginning.
“It’s great to be able to put on a show featuring so much talent at a brand-new venue such as the impressive Newcastle Eagles Arena.
“We hope to host more events that keep increasing in stature so that fight fans in the region are treated to regular mouth-watering action.”
