Take a bow ladies. Tyne Tees & Wear’s female boxers enjoyed a good day at England’s National Amateur Championships.
Jade Pearce, Hannah Robinson, Sadie Thomas, Hannah Shield and April Hunter all won through to Sunday’s semi-finals in Nottingham.
Middlesbrough boxer Jade Pearce, representing the Wellington club with the same aplomb as dad John, set the ball rolling for the TTW division by beating Angelica Finch (Boston Town) by a split decision.
Then came the intriguing U60 division where Tyne, Tees & Wear provided THREE of the quarter-finalists in one of the most competitive sections in the tournament.
GB boxer and number one seed Hannah Robinson (pictured) defeated Sian O’Toole (Frankie Gavin’s), the Birtley boxer a unanimous winner.
It was the same in the other side of the draw as Headland’s Sadie Thomas beat Ellie Hopkins (City of Leicester) by the same result.
However, there would be no semi-final derby for the Hartlepool star as Lambton Street’s Simone Thompson lost out in her quarter-final to Louise Orton (St Mary’s) via a split decision.
At U64 kilos, Birtley’s Hannah Shield was a unanimous winner against Adrienne Phobey (Eastbourne) in her quarter-final.
TTW were by no means finished in the female section as Howdon’s April Hunter saw off Paige Goodyear (Brooklands) at U69 by a split decision.
Georgia O’Connor, another of the Birtley crew, was already through at middleweight and will have a straight final against Jodie Wilkinson in Manchester on Saturday, April 13.
Good luck, and good skill, to all the Tyne, Tees & Wear girls in Sunday’s semi-finals in Nottingham. You can watch the action via the BBC website.
