Can Jordan Ellison fight for a title in 2019?
Don’t raise your eye brows, punch-lines is being deadly serious. The man who will fight anyone, anywhere at any time might well be in the championship picture, and rightly so, after one of the results of his career.
Ellison upset the odds and the home corner in Liverpool where he defeated Merseyside warrior Sean ‘Masher’ Dodd.
The Gus Robinson Developments boxer was a deserved 59-57 winner over the former Commonwealth champion at the famous Olympia arena at the VIP-promoted show.
Ellison outfought the 34-year-old warrior, losing only one round on the scorecard of referee Jamie Kirkpatrick.
The 23-year-old is not your archetype journey man who turns up, loses, but survives to earn a few bob a week later.
Yes, the Seaham lightweight travels to all corners of the UK, but he goes to win as EIGHT home stars have found to their cost since he joined the Gus Robinson Developments camp.
He has also ‘beaten’ George Jupp in London and Lance Cooksey in Wales only to be on the rough end of a points decision.
“It was a great win over Dodd, but he boxed better against Cooksey in my opinion,” said Gus Robinson head coach Peter Cope, who believes the British Boxing Board of Control should have the Seaham lightweight in their championship considerations.
“When we took the Dodd fight we thought we could win it.
“Masher is a proper hard man but has the sort of style which is right up Jordan’s street.
“I do believe Jordan deserves something and if he waits then It could happen for him.
“But he wants to be fighting and earning so is he prepared to wait?
“I’m not sure, but what I do know is for him to go on the road and beat a fella who was Commonwealth champ just a couple of fights ago shows just what he can do.
“He is a great professional and a proper nice lad and I’m over the moon for him after he was robbed in Wales against Cooksey.”
Ellison’s record stands at 11-19, six of his wins taking the unbeaten record of the home boxer, while among his defeats has been aseventh-round stoppage by Lewis Ritson for the Northern Area title.
