Newcastle and North-East boxing has a state-of-the-art home for aspiring champions and the keen enthusiast.
O’Tooles Health and Fitness, situated in Byker, just a short distance from Newcastle city centre is up AND running.
The gym, at 308 Shields Road, is the inspiration of boxing figure, Neil Conlon, dad of new pro, James.
The talented young southpaw is the first professional to be based at O’Tooles though Neil is hoping his son is the first of many, while also providing a facility for those who simply love the sport.
“This sport has been in my blood since I was a kid,” Neil told punch-lines.
“My grandfather, Jimmy Conlon, was a boxer so I’ve grown up with boxing.
“James boxed for Forest Hall for Davy Ritson and his pro career is under way.
“I’ve helped amateur clubs with their shows before, like Forest Hall and Sunderland ABC and I’ve sponsored the Summer Rumble before at the Stadium of Light.
“Opening a gym was something I really wanted to do and I’m pleased to say we’ve been going for a month now and we’re open for business every day.
“It’s a high-quality gym with not just the best equipment but the highly professional coaches.”
O’Tooles Boxing takes up the top floor, where there is a full-sized boxing ring, a cage for those with a persuasion for MMA, bags and treadmills.

“I want O’Tooles to be a top pro gym,” said Neil Conlon. “We have one now and we’d love more here.
“O’Tooles is more than that. All boxers, 16 or over, are welcome here, male or female, and whether they are a good boxer or a beginner.
“We have the right environment and great coaches, Niki Gittus does the boxing and Fabrice Mason, an ex-MMA fighter does the MMA coaching and is a first-class strength and conditioning coach.
“We cater for all levels, all aspirations, and it’s all here in a great environment to learn, progress and enjoy a fantastic sport.”
