Hartlepool’s Mayfair JD Sports Domes will open another chapter in its history when it stages the Junior ABA quarter-finals on Sunday (start 1pm).
The state-of-the-art Seaton Carew sporting facility has been synonymous with boxing for decades.
Amanda Coulson’s rise to the top of the women’s game began at the Mayfair Centre when topping the bill on the Catholic Club shows at the Tees Road venue.
The same too for another Hartlepool boxing legend, Michael Hunter, who starred on the Super Sunday shows on his journey to British, Commonwealth and European titles, not to mention a world championship challenge.
Now, the Mayfair JD Sports Domes are displaying the next Hunters and Coulsons in the Junior ABA Championships.
Over 30 clubs from the Tyne, Tees & Wear Association will be there to chase semi-final places.
The event is the inspiration of Tracey Saunders, the events manager of the Mayfair JD Sports Domes.
Tracey, an ABA official, has been in the sport for decades and is probably best known as being the mum of two of the area’s most decorated amateur talents turned professionals, Bradley and Jeff.
“We’re very proud to be staging these championships,” said Tracey.
“We’ve put on a number of club shows already at the Mayfair JD Sports Domes and they have all been well received.
“Hosting a championship was the next step and we’re honoured to have this.
“Some of the boxers we’ll be watching will be the stars of tomorrow.
“We’ll being going flat out on the boxing front here now.”
Tickets are available on the door at the Mayfair JD Sports Domes with entry priced at £10. Doors open at 11am.
The weigh-in will take place between 10am and noon.
The JD Sports Domes is an open-daily family-friendly state-of-the-art facility from indoor football and indoor golf to a bar and restaurant and function room suitable for wedding receptions and other celebrations. Ring 01429 800570 for details.
