Jordan Ellison will go into his title fight this weekend with his confidence strengthened by sharing a ring with two British champions.
The 22-year-old meets unbeaten Kent lightweight Luke Gibb for the British Promoters Association Classic Challenge Belt in Maidstone on Saturday.
Gibb, unbeaten after four contests, will start as heavy favourite at Maidstone Leisure Centre though that will not deter the Hartlepool team after a good training camp.
The Gus Robinson Developments star has sparred with unbeaten North-East neighbours Lewis Ritson and Tommy Ward ahead of the big clash.
“Jordan has not only sparred with two British champions but two of the best champs out there,” said head coach Peter Cope.
“He had two spars with Lewis who is defending his title this weekend and he did seven rounds with Tommy in his last spar. He has a fight in a couple of weeks so he’s in good shape.
“I’m not sure you could get two better spars than that and I was really impressed by how Jordan performed.
“He has a hard fight on Saturday but it’s one I’m confident he can go and win.”
Travelling to his opponent’s home turf is no barrier to Ellison as he has proved throughout his stay with the Gus Robinson Developments, winning six of his 16 excursions, all against either unbeaten prospects or home-town ticket-sellers.
Ellison saw off an undefeated fighter last time out, beating Lancashire lad Colin Day over four rounds in Wigan.
“Jordan always goes to win and he’s picked up his fair share of results,” added Cope. “I’m over the moon with him, he’s a joy to train and I think he’s got a chance with this fight.”
Gibb has won all three of his pro bouts, all at Maidstone Leisure Centre, where he has outpointed Ibrar Riyaz, Jamie Quinn and Fonz Alexander.
