Anthony Nelson is relishing watching two of his team-mates have tear-ups on Tyneside.
South Shields duo Paul Gidney and Sam Menzies box on Steve Wraith’s Sunday afternoon show in Dunston.
Gidney will take on ex-Scottish Championship challenger Scott McCormack over six rounds while Menzies will make his pro debut against Ricky Leach.
Nelson, training towards his own comeback this spring, has seen his comrades at close quarters at the Harton & Westoe Miners Welfare gym.
Menzies, dubbed the Pocket Rocket, has followed the same path as the former Commonwealth super-flyweight champion, representing Horsley Hill ABC in the amateurs before signing for Mal Gates.
“Sam will do well,” predicted Nella.
“He has a similar style to me, he likes to come forward and a bit of a fight, and that means we have some good spars!
“He can box but he likes to get involved and have a fight.
“I’ve seen him progress from my club from when he was a young lad, he’s good to watch, you’ll see Sam have entertaining fights and I can’t wait to see him.”
The South Shields hero is equally looking forward to watching G Dog released off his leash in the Lancastrian Suite ring.
Gidney, also 21 like Menzies, had been due to tackle Darlington’s Chrissy Wood for a challenge belt, only for his North-East rival quit the sport.
“It was disappointing for the title fight to fall through,” said the 33-year-old. “He was gutted.
“But Mal got him matched up straight away so he lost none of his momentum.
“He has a different opponent and it’s note now for the title but he’s still fighting on the same show.
“Paul is absolutely flying, I’ve sparred with him too and he’s looking great.”
