Dazzla is back and ready to dazzle. Darren Surtees returns after a 10-month absence when he fights in his favourite ring next month.
The 23-year-old, who has not fought since winning the Northern Area light-welterweight title last May, will contest a six-rounder when Phil Jeffries stages his first show of 2018 on Saturday, March 10 in Houghton.
Surtees has made a rapid start to his professional career, seven straight victories with five achieved inside the distance.
However, illness and injury have interrupted his rise up the 10st division since though coach, Dave Binns, says his back problem is now resolved ahead of the Thornley puncher’s sixth appearance at Rainton Meadows Arena.
“Darren’s looking well,” said the Peterlee-based trainer. “It’s been frustrating for him but that’s life, it’s only been a short-term thing.
“He’d got himself a bit down in the dumps wondering if it was ever going to get better, but of course it would.
“He’s back and working on full throttle.”
Talking of full throttle, Surtees has had a knack of rushing through his wins, but Bins is keen on seeing Darren concentrate on his ring skills and would not complain should the bout go the distance.
“Darren is great to watch when he lets his hands go and he has natural power,” said the coach in his East Durham College gym.
“Whoever he hits he seems to give them problems, but I don’t want to talk about that I want to focus on his boxing.”
Darren’s stablemates, Tom and Joe Hill are also on the bill as Jeffries sends out some of the North-East’s up and coming talent, like James Conlon, Joe Maphosa, Kris Pilkington and Mark Taylor.
