Hartlepool star Savannah Marshall’s opponent named for first North-East fight

Savannah Marshall is looking forward to blowing off the cobwebs when she steps foot in the ring for the first time in 2019.

The unbeaten Hartlepool star takes on rugged Bulgarian, Borislava Goranova, in Dunston on Friday, March 29.

Marshall has won all five of her professional appearances, including a glory night in Sofia last October when she won the vacant WBA Inter-Continental super-middleweight title against Argentina’s Yanina Orozco.

She followed that 10-round points decision with a victory in Manchester in November when she hammered Klaudia Vigh to defeat inside two rounds.

Now she is thrilled to be be back and performing at the Lancastrian Suite, pretty much her backyard.

“It’s great to have a contest,” said the 27-year-old. “I was supposed to have a fight in February but that fell through and then I was supposed to be on a Lewis Ritson show in March but then that fell through.

“Getting on this has been a stroke of luck.

“To be boxing in the North-East is a dream come true.

“It’s so nice to be able to box in front of my family and friends.”

You can’t always tell for sure, but Goranova is likely to provide a difficult hurdle to clear.

The seasoned campaigner, from Sofia, has not been stopped since 2012, the year Marshall struck gold in China to become the UK’s first female world champion and only the second overall.

Goranova has been in with some top opposition and Marshall is taking nothing for granted.

“She looks very durable,” said the 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist.

“She’s been in with the leading British stars like Hannah Rankin and Stacey Copeland and some of the top fighters in Europe and the world.

“It’s nice to be getting back in there and blowing off the cobwebs.”

Marshall has completed the hard part of her training camp, working in Manchester with coach, Peter Fury, and her stablemate, Hughie Fury, the British heavyweight champion.

“It has gone really well,” added the ex-Headland ABC middleweight. “I’m now looking forward to putting what we’ve worked him into the ring.”

Marshall is part of a six-fight card presented by Black Flash Promotions, in association with Mark Clauzel.

MTK trio Chad Ellis, Jay Hughes and Darren Reay are on the event, along with Basi Razak and debutant, Gary Dodds.
