Joe Maphosa-Louis Norman: Win for Smokin’ Joe could open title door

It’s not make or break for Joe Maphosa on Saturday night or anything like that, but a win over Louis Norman would certainly open a door or two to “Smokin’ Joe”.

Maphosa headlines the New Kids on the Block event at Rainton Meadows, stepping up in distance and quality.

The 24-year-old, from Thornaby, faces Leicestershire’s former English champion and British title challenger over six rounds at the Houghton venue.

Maphosa, trained by Imran Naeem in Stockton and under the Warren umbrella, is looking better by the fight and has chalked up seven straight wins.

Norman, with a very creditable record of 13-6-1, will provide the toughest hurdle yet.

The man who calls himself “2Sweet” has not lived up to his moniker in the build-up to the event promoted by Phil Jeffries and Steve Wraith.

He has tried to pick a fight with all and sundry on social media including this just-on-the-wrong-side-of-chubby author of this story.

“I’ll be whooping Joe about the ring,” wrote the 25-year-old. “Keep on underestimating me, your in for a shock.”

Those 17 words may not alter the betting for the fight which will have Maphosa as the slight favourite, but it shows Norman is up for it.

As Imran explained, the chances in the lighter divisions can come quicker than further up the scales.

For instance, Joe’s North-East neighbour, Thomas Essomba, won the Commonwealth flyweight title in only his sixth contest.

“A win against Louis would put us nearer a position to challenge for titles,” said the NPBA coach. “I think it can happen for Joe sooner rather than later.

“Joe’s worked really hard and he’s been getting fitter and stronger by the week.

“I was able to see in the sparring that the things we have been working on in the gym have come together.

“Joe is in a good place, physically and mentally.”

Maphosa’s stablemate, Terry Tyers, is also in action on the show, coming up against a tough customer in Chris Jenkinson.

It will be the fifth pro date for Tyers who has four wins with one inside the distance.

“I don’t mind taking things nice and easy with Terry,” added Imran. “I want to get all the fundamentals solidly embedded.

“I’m looking to see the jab working consistently and constantly.

“He’s a tough, strong lad who has earned the wins he’s had so far.

“I’m confident he’ll do well but he’s a fighter I’m happy to take my time with.”

Tickets are available on the door for the 10-fight promotion which also stars unbeaten Newcastle prospects Joe Laws and Terry Wilkinson.
