Ellis Corrie starts big year with Darlington date and hopes bad luck is behind him

Lady luck gave Ellis Corrie’s corner a wide berth in 2018.

But the Darlington fighter will be looking to make his own luck this year as he aims to advance in the boxing world.

Corrie, a Muay Thai fighter turned Marquess of Queensberry, will have his first bout of 2019 this Saturday at the Dolphin Centre.

The 21-year-old takes on Manchester’s Dale Arrowsmith on Steve Wraith’s four-fight D-Day in Darlo card.

Misfortune plagued the Pete Shepperson-trained prospect last year.

He was unlucky to lose out to undefeated Welsh prospect Mareddud Thomas in Ebbw Vale in a very tight contest in April and more frustration would follow in May when an eight-round North-East derby with Basi Razak collapsed minutes before the scheduled start time when his opponent walked out in a dispute over a title belt.

Added to that a mooted September showdown with Tom Whitfield also went the journey.

Corrie, who began his career with two excellent wins, has not been seen for 10 months, but his trainer is delighted to report that situation is ready to change.

“Ellis is back in full flow after a disappointing 2018 with pull outs and injuries,” Shepperson told punch-lines.

“We need him to push on now and get some momentum going.”

Corrie and Shepperson are ambitious and, evidenced by taking that bout in South Wales against Thomas they are not preoccupied by building padded records against dummies.

“An Area title would be a good aim for this year and move up the rankings,” added Pete.

“I genuinely believe this lad is a different class and can go way beyond domestic level in the coming years if he sticks with it, and gets that momentum going.”

We will get a decent idea how he is looking over his four rounds against Arrowsmith on Saturday.

Elsewhere on the bill, Middlesbrough’s John Green faces Stockport’s Jamie Quinn over six while popular Darlington light-heavy Ste Cooper tackles Zach Thompson, from Newark.

There is an intriguing four-rounder at cruiserweight as new pro, Daryll Hall, goes toe to toe with Iranian fighter Taha Mirhosseini.
