James Conlon puts his skills to good use at O’Tooles

James Conlon is taking a break from the ring, but that does not mean he is putting his feet up.

The Newcastle professional is still busy in the O’Tooles gym, but with his trainer’s head on rather than letting his shots go.

He made a successful pro debut back in March with a skilled display to outpoint Casey Blair.

James is currently recovering from an elbow problem though the quality southpaw is working for his dad at the state-of-the-art Byker premises, putting his knowledge and passion to good use.

Dad Neil, who opened O’Tooles in the spring, said: “The gym is taking off more and more.

“Loads of people have been coming in and it’s great to see.

“There is a buzz about the city at the moment, and all over the region, with boxing.

“The success of Lewis Ritson has been brilliant for Newcastle and the North-East and it will grow.

“It’s a great sport and we are seeing more come into our gym, whether that’s been to improve their skills or a way to get fitter.

“James is currently out but he’s been doing some sessions here, including one to one training.

“We aim to put on more group sessions too so there will be something for everyone.

“A boxing gym can be daunting place I guess to walk into for the first time but our aim at O’Tooles is to provide a good and safe environment.

Neil McVicar in the fitness suite at O’Tooles

“We have a great coach running the boxing in Nikki Gittus and I’d like to think there is no better place for people to enjoy this sport, whether it’s a beginner starting off or a seasoned pro.”

Whichever bracket the customer falls into, or somewhere in between, providing they are 16 or over then O’Tooles will provide the expertise.

O’Tooles Boxing takes up the top floor of the Shields Road building, where a full-sized boxing ring takes centre stage, while there are bags and treadmills around the room. There is also a cage for those with a liking for MMA.

Downstairs is the state-of-the-art O’Tooles Health & Fitness, managed by Neil McVicar.

“We have the best of all worlds,” added Neil Conlon, “O’Tooles is not all about boxing, it’s an incredible fitness facility we have invested great time and care into.”

You can find O’Tooles at 308 Shields Road, in Byker.
